National University begins its four-peat title quest against bitter rival University of Sto. Tomas.
The epic rivalry between high school powerhouse teams reigning champion National University and University of Sto. Tomas continues Monday as they begin their best-of-three 80th UAAP girls volleyball championship series at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Game 1 of the fifth straight Finals encounter of the four-peat seeking Bullpups and Junior Tigresses is at 4:00 p.m. after the boys’ title series to be disputed by University of Sto. Tomas and Far Eastern University-Diliman at 2:00 p.m.
NU and UST split their eliminations head-to-head.
The Bullpups foiled the Junior Tigresses' sweep bid with a straight sets win in the second round after absorbing defeat in their first meeting of the season. NU tied UST at 11-1, but the Bustillos-based spikers took the No. 1 ranking by virtue of a superior quotient.
The Bullpups defeated FEU-Diliman in the Final Four while the Lady Tigresses booted out De La Salle-Zobel in their semis pairing.
Meanwhile, the top ranked Baby Tamaraws reached its first-ever boys Finals after beating fourth-ranked University of the East, 22-25, 25-23, 28-30, 25-17, 15-12, in the semis while the Tigercubs clinched the last championship berth after winning by default against dethroned NU in their do-or-die match.
