A NEW HOPE. Rookie of the Year Juan Gomez de Liano will have four more years to play for UP.
The University of the Philippines has a bright future – and they will now have something to prove it.
Fighting Maroon Juan Gomez de LIano is the hands-down top newcomer in the UAAP 80 Men’s Basketball Tournament and will be recognized as Rookie of the Year before Game 2 of the Finals on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The recently-turned 18-year-old compiled 46.69 SPs in just his first year on the back of averages of 11.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and one steal.
That placed him 13th in the MVP race – even ahead of Far Eastern University main man Ron Dennison and Adamson University ace scorer Jerrick Ahanmisi.
That also put Gomez de Liano far and away from closest competitor Enzo Joson of National University who had 28.43 SPs.
The Rookie of the Year will have four more years to represent State U which is hopeful for an end, sooner than later, to their 20-year playoff absence.
To do that, Gomez de Liano will be teaming up with brother Javi, Paul Desiderio, Jun Manzo, and transferee Bright Akhuetie.
UP’s pride also follows in the footsteps of De La Salle University’s Aljun Melecio as UAAP Jrs. MVP who then went on to win UAAP Srs. Rookie of the Year.
