Good news for DLSU? ‘Master of threes’ Aljun Melecio is back
I'M HERE. Aljun Melecio has just played his best game in a while.

Aljun Melecio was the leading scorer in the league after De La Salle University’s first two games in the UAAP 80 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

And then, just like that, the sophomore scoring dynamo’s shot went missing.

Since scoring 29 against Far Eastern University and then 20 versus National University, he has failed to breach the 15-point marker.

Making things worse, Melecio had a bout with dengue that forced him to sit out three games.

Safe to say, from the third game of the elimination round until the semifinals, the Green Archers were missing the Season 79 Rookie of the Year.

Fortunately for Taft Avenue, their scoring dynamo finally came back to life in Game 1 of the Finals.

Scattering 24 points on top of three assists and three steals all throughout, Melecio was a big reason why DLSU was able to keep things interesting despite an off night from reigning and defending MVP Ben Mbala.

So much so that Mike Nieto of archrival Ateneo de Manila University took notice. “Yeah, (this reminds me of high school). He’s Aljun Melecio, one of the best point guards here in the league together with Matt [Nieto] and Kib [Montalbo],” he said.

He then continued, “Noong nasu-shoot na niya yung three points niya, ‘di naman na kami nagulat. Actually, we kind of expected that ‘cause he’s Aljun Melecio. He’s the master of threes.”

Nieto, then leader of the Blue Eaglets, had waged war with former King Junior Archer Melecio in the UAAP Juniors.

However, the point guard’s mighty rebound came in a loss as the Green Archers fell to the Blue Eagles, 70-76.

And so, he said both he and his team need to do more. “Kulang pa yung performance kasi may mas better decision-making pa kaming dapat nagawa,” he told reporters post-game.

He then continued, “Kailangan naming mag-bounce back at mag-adjust sa execution namin sa Ateneo.”
