NO MALICE. Ben Mbala said Matt Nieto was late on his rotation and, unfortunately, that's why the former's left elbow hit the latter's left eyebrow.
Ben Mbala’s left elbow came down hard on the right eyebrow of Matt Nieto late in the second quarter on Saturday.
And so, Ateneo de Manila University’s point guard was down on the floor and bleeding bad.
Asked about the incident post-game, De La Salle University’s big man answered, “It’s part of basketball. I had the ball and (spun). He was late on the rotation, that’s why he got hit.”
Mbala then reiterated that he did not mean for what happened to happen. “I didn’t intend to hit him or hurt him,” he expressed.
The Cameroonian powerhouse wanted that message to be heard by Nieto’s father Jett. According to the former, the latter was yelling expletives at him right after the incident.
“I don’t know why his dad is cursing at me, threatening me, and telling me I am dead. That is not something you should be doing,” he told reporters. “He’s been (here) for quite some time and we all know things like that happen all the time. I did not intend to hurt his son.”
Still, Mbala said he understood where the elder Nieto was coming from. “I don’t wanna mind that. I’ll just say he was probably in the emotion of the game and seeing his son on the floor,” he said.
He then continued, “But again, it is just part of the game.”
