UAAP Finals: B2B titles more important than B2B MVPs for Ben Mbala

DLSUís Ben Mbala wants to be back-to-back champion much more than he wants to be back-to-back MVP.
It’s official now: Ben Mbala is a back-to-back MVP along with being a one-time champion.
Mbala received his second straight top individual award on Wednesday.
And he could also become a back-to-back champion – along with De La Salle University if all goes their way in the winner-take all Game 3 of the Finals of the UAAP 80 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
For Mbala, who hails from Cameroon, that continued team glory matters much more than his continued individual dominance. “I feel like I’ll only prove myself with back-to-back championships. That’s better for me,” he said after the Green Archers scored a big-time 92-83 win.
That much was evident in the do-or-die Game 2 as Mbala posted a 20-point, 16-rebound double-double to go along with four blocks. “Coming into (this game), we’re not coming here to lose. It’s not like we’re gonna go out here and be like, ‘Oh, I got the MVP, that’s it,’” he shared.
That kind of performance is a return to norm for the six-foot-seven Mbala who was shackled down to only eight points and 12 rebounds in their Game 1 loss.
Without a doubt, the desire for another championship is the fuel that has been keeping Mbala going.
And not even cramps, felt in much of his body, wasn’t going to stop him from making his desire come true. “Late in the fourth, I was kinda cramping up, but it’s the Finals so you gotta play through it. You don’t want to look fir excuses or reasons,” he said afterward.
He then continued, “I needed to be there for the team and luckily, I was able to finish the game.”
Game Three of the UAAP Men's Basketball Finals will air on December 3, Sunday LIVE at 3:30 pm on ABS-CBN Channel 2, S+A, S+A HD and via livestream.
