Kai Sotto led the way for the Ateneo Blue Eaglets as they demolished the UST Tiger Cubs, 94-63, in the UAAP Season 80 juniors basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym Sunday.
Sotto made his interior presence felt with 20 points on an efficient 10/14 shooting clip, 13 rebounds, and seven blocks, as Ateneo won their fifth straight game to start the season.
Sean Ildefonso added 19 points while SJ Belangel registered 15 markers.
The Tiger Cubs, who fall to a 3-2 record, led at the end of the first quarter from a buzzer-beating triple by Vince Dolendo, 18-15.
However, it would be the final time UST would take control of the game as the Blue Eaglets suddenly shifted to a higher gear and launched a 21-5 blitz that gave Ateneo a 36-20 lead.
The Tiger Cubs then lost the guidance of head coach Chris Cantonjos immediately after the huge Ateneo run as he was ejected for storming the court.
Things never got in UST's way again as the Blue Eaglets cruised through the rest of the game, leading by as much as 33 points in the payoff period, 94-61.
John Cansino paced UST's scoring with a 20-point performance. Bismark Lina was the only other Tiger Cub in double figures with 10.
"If we let UST hung around, we knew it would have been a close game," Blue Eaglets head coach Joe Silva said. "I just told my team to play defense. Defense is really the team's identity."
In the second game, the Adamson Baby Falcons defeated the UPIS Junior Maroons in a wire-to-wire victory, score.
Jose Sabandal had an all-around game for Adamson, scoring 19, grabbing four rebounds, and dishing six assists. Andrey Doria added 17 points and six rebounds. Jacob Estrera meanwhile led the way for the FIghting Maroons with 13 points. Matt Santiago and Rafael Labao contributed 12 points apiece.
It was all Adamson in the game as the Baby Falcons soared from the get-go and never looked back, leading by as much as 35, 81-46, in the fourth quarter.
Adamson improved to a 2-3 slate while the Junior Maroons fall to 1-4.
