Who has blocks on both Steph Curry and Ben Mbala? Only Gian Mamuyac
Gian Mamuyac denied entry to Ben Mbala in one amazing sequence during Game 3 between Ateneo and DLSU
Gian Mamuyac’s numbers didn’t say much about his skills or contribute much to Ateneo de Manila University’s championship win last Sunday.
He only had three points, three rebounds, and nine minutes in that winner-take-all Game 3.
He gave us one of the highlights of the game, however.
Yes, six-foot swingman Mamuyac rejected an inside shot by six-foot-seven and back-to-back MVP Ben Mbala.
While it was far from a game-winner or game-sealer or anything of the kind, it was still quite the image for the Blue Eagles’ wonderful season – which saw, through the tournament, a less-heralded group of guys standing up to and then getting the better of Camerooninan powerhouse Mbala and once-defending champion De La Salle University.
It was also an image showing how Ateneo consistently got contributions from all over its roster.
For reference, Mamuyac only averaged 9.6 minutes of play in the Finals, but made an impact by clamping down on the likes of Aljun Melecio, Ricci Rivero, and yes, Mbala.
For those in the know about him and his skills, however, that block is no longer a surprise.
Long known as a defensive stopper, the long-limbed Mamuyac has had many gems against the likes of Melecio, John Lloyd Clemente, and Marvin Lee in the UAAP Juniors.
And oh, he also has had this defensive gem at the expense of this somebody named Steph Curry.
Yes, Gian Mamuyac now has a resume most of us could only dream of – one-time UAAP Seniors champion, one-time UAAP Juniors champion, and owner of defensive stops on both NBA MVP Steph Curry and back-to-back UAAP MVP Ben Mbala.
And the first-year player is only getting started.
