A third season is something new for returning coach Aldin
Just as head coach Aldin Ayo has never gotten back-to-back championships, he has also never been back for a third year

It’s official – Aldin Ayo will be back for his third season in De La Salle University.

The one-time NCAA and one-time UAAP champion coach had already said right after the end of Season 80 that he will be back.

Still, questions persisted about his post with the Green Archers as all season long, rumors circulated that he was in line to take over University of Sto. Tomas.

Now, however, the Taft-based school has categorically stated that there will be no coaching change in its men’s basketball program. “Management is firmly behind coach Aldin Ayo and his staff as we start the process of rebuilding for the future,” their statement read.

The statement went on to say that DLSU will be back in practice on January 16 of next year with Ayo still calling the shots.

This confirms that the 40-year-old will be back for his third go-round in the UAAP – something he has not done in his past leagues. “Wala pa akong experience sa pangatlong season. Fresh for me, bago sa akin yun,” he told reporters in an earlier interview.

He then continued, “’Di ko alam kung ano ang meron dun.”

Ayo only coached in his alma mater Colegio de San Juan de Letran for one year before taking on the challenge of mentoring the Green Archers. Before that, he had been based in the province where, according to him, he had never gone three seasons into a post and had never won back-to-back championships.

With all settled in Taft Avenue, however, he will finally find out what’s in store in the third season.

For that, he will be flanked by team captain Kib Montalbo, impressive transferee Santi Santillan, as well as sophomore studs Aljun Melecio and Ricci Rivero.

And then, they will have one thing and one thing only on their minds. “Of course, we want to bounce back next year,” Ayo expressed.
