UE is most likely to score its first win by virtue of NU's forfeiture
Nazareth School of National University is in danger of losing one of its six wins in the UAAP 80 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
According to sources, the Bullpups may have to forfeit their season-opening victory versus University of the East for allegedly fielding in an ineligible player.
Last November, the Sampaloc-based squad crushed the Junior Warriors, 107-69, to open its campaign in style.
However, that decision may be overturned – giving UE its first win of the season and a 1-5 record while dropping NU to 5-2.
Sources opted not to disclose the name of the player allegedly in question, but official statistics reveal that Jayson Puray’s first and only game in the season was the one against UE. There, he had eight points and three rebounds in 13 minutes.
Since then, Puray has not seen action.
ABS-CBN Sports has been trying to reach Bullpups head coach Goldwyn Monteverde for comment, but he is yet to respond.
Sources said that a memo regarding the forfeiture will be released by the league office sometime within the week.
Along with a shakeup in the standings, tying NU with University of Sto. Tomas for the second spot, the development will also have implications on the awards race.
With one less win, the win bonus of contender Rhayyan Amsali of the Bullpups will be decreased.
On the other hand, in such case, Junior Warrior Agem Miranda will finally have a win bonus to add to his total.
This will no doubt boost his bid for an individual award which has thus far been anchored upon eye-popping averages of 17.9 points in 41.1 percent shooting, 8.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 2.1 steals.
