RJ Abarrientos hopes he can reach the same heights his uncle Johnny did with FEU

More than two decades after Johnny Abarrientos first took flight while playing for Far Eastern University, his nephew is hoping to do exactly the same.

RJ Abarrientos, the son of the sister of the Philippine basketball legend, will be following in the footsteps of his tito and will be playing for the Tamaraws in the Seniors. “Tutuloy po ako sa FEU sa college,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.

The younger Abarrientos is currently the captain of the Baby Tamaraws who are in the middle of their title defense in the Juniors.

There, the 5-foot-11 guard has impressed with per game counts of a team-best 13.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.8 assists.

Like fellow FEU-commit L-Jay Gonzales, Abarrientos can do it all, but also has superior size at the guard position.

The 18-year-old will be yet another promising prospect in the backcourt of a team that has historically produced good, and even great, guards including “The Flying A,” Mark Barroca, RR Garcia, Terrence Romeo, and Mike Tolomia.

While the Juniors tournament is still ongoing and the Seniors tournament is a long way away, Baby Tamaraws head coach Allan Albano said there is no reason not to believe Abarrientos and Gonzales are indeed staying in Morayta. “Sinabi na nga nila and naniniwala ako sa sa kanila,” he said.

For Albano, their commitment is yet another testament to their basketball program which prioritizes developing talent from a young age. “Never naman kaming nagre-recruit. Blessing sa aming may darating na sinasabing blue-chip (player), pero sa program namin, galing naman talaga sa high school ang talent,” he said.

He then continued, “Kaya malaking tulong sa amin siyempre si L-Jay at the RJ.”
