Randy Alcantara will be tasked to make sure the UST Tiger Cubs keep growling in the UAAP Juniors
Aldin Ayo has his first recruit for University of Sto. Tomas – and it is a big one.
The new head coach for the Growling Tigers will add to his staff a fellow young mentor who has made his name making the most out of whatever he has in his lineup.
According to sources, Ayo is all-set to welcome Randy Alcantara to join him in the bench alongside Rene Baena, Kristoffer Co, Bonnie Garcia, and Mcjour Luib.
The development was first reported by Reuben Terrado of spin.ph.
Alcantara is an esteemed coach who built Mapua High School’s program from the ground up. That has led to one championship and one runner-up finish in the last two years.
Along the way, he has guided the development of promising prospects such as NCAA MVPs Mike Enriquez and Will Gozum as well as Warren Bonifacio, Sherwin Concepcion, and Clint Escamis.
Now, along with serving as Ayo’s most decorated lieutenant, Alcantara is also being looked at to lead the continued rise of UST’s high school program.
Sources said the one-time NCAA Juniors champion coach will be taking over from Chris Cantonjos who is currently overseeing a campaign that has the Tiger Cubs right in the thick of things in the UAAP Juniors.
Once Alcantara formally takes over, he will have some recruitment to do as UST High is set to lose MVP leader CJ Cansino to graduation after the ongoing season.
Mapua will not be losing the young mentor, however, as according to sources, he will be staying on with the Red Robins.
ABS-CBN Sports has been contacting Alcantara, but he has not returned any messages as of press time.
ABS-CBN Sports has also been trying to get a comment from Ayo, but he is yet to respond.
According to a source, he has been barred from media interviews by UST’s Institute of Physical Education and Athletics.
