A year after securing the services of the UAAP Juniors MVP, the University of the Philippines has clinched the commitment of the NCAA Juniors MVP.
NCAA Juniors MVP Will Gozum is set to play for the Fighting Maroons next season – joining former UAAP Juniors MVP and last year’s UAAP Seniors Rookie of the Year Juan Gomez de Liano.
The news was first broken by the UP Men’s Basketball Team Twitter.
Head coach Bo Perasol then confirmed the development to ABS-CBN Sports.
It will be a homecoming of sorts for the six-foot-six big man who was once part of a promising core for State U’s high school team with Gomez de Liano brothers Javi and Juan. However, he was cut from the roster for reasons he opted not to disclose.
Fortunately, Gozum landed on his feet with Mapua High School and established himself as one of the blue-chip prospects in this high school graduating class.
The 18-year-old averaged 13.8 points in 49 percent shooting on top of 9.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 1.3 assists all while leading the Red Robins to the Finals where they eventually lost in an epic three-game series to College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills.
Now, he has a chance to continue what he had already started in Diliman.
Gozum can play both center and power forward, bolstering a frontline that already includes Bright Akhuetie, Paul Desiderio, Javi GDL, Jerson Prado, Gelo Vito, and Noah Webb.
Then manning the backcourt for a State U side with Final Four aspirations are Diego Dario, Juan GDL, Jarrell Lim, Jun Manzo, and Jaydee Tungcab.
