UAAP 80 VOLLEYBALL: Ibabawi ng Lady Spikers ang Green Archers -- Macandili

Parang lahat kami sobrang motivated and sobrang hungry na maglaro this season kasi nga we’re not just playing for ourselves, we’re not just playing for the Lady Spikers, for the coaches but for the whole La Sallian community -- DLSU libero Dawn Macandili
De La Salle University’s women’s volleyball season started when Ateneo’s Isaac Go drilled a heartbreaking dagger behind the rainbow arc that signaled the collapse of the Green Archers' reign in men’s basketball.
Two months clear of their tournament, the Lady Spikers already knew that expectations are high when they shoot for a grand slam in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball competition.
Graduating player Dawn Macandili could clearly recall that balmy Sunday afternoon when their season virtually began.
The Green Archers were making a huge run in the closing minutes of the men’s basketball Finals Game 3 at the Big Dome against the Blue Eagles.
“Hindi ako nanonood pero nag-aabang ako sa Twitter ng scores,” said Macandili as she turned to social media for updates on the winner-take-all game. “Parang ako, kaya yan ng La Salle.”
DLSU chopped their 70-80 deficit with under five minutes into just a single-possession gap 80-82 with only a minute to go. But the comeback never came.
Getting the kickout pass from Thirdy Ravena, Go swished a brutal shot clock buzzer-beating three-pointer with 24.7 ticks left to give Ateneo a five-point cushion. Go thrusts the Green Archers’ arrow right in their hearts.
“Pero ‘yun nga nu’ng kinapos sila parang ayan na nag-start na ang mga nagta-tag sa amin na ibawi n’yo ang Green Archers,” Macandili said.
The Asia’s 2nd Best Libero winner from last year’s AVC Asian Women’s Senior Championship already knew that it will be their responsibility to bring back the lost pride of the green and white.
“‘Yun nga right after ng men’s basketball, ayan na. Nag-start na ang mga fans na nagta-tag na, “Uy ibawi nyo yung Green Archers.” Ibabawi ng Lady Spikers ang Green Archers, so parang kami, hindi pa nagi-start officially ang season namin, dun sa (talo ng men’s basketball) parang dun siya nag-start sa last game ng basketball,” she said.
The defeat of their men’s basketball team will serve as fuel to their burning desire to keep the women’s volleyball title at Taft Avenue.
This season is personal.
This is not just for the glory of their team anymore. This war is for the La Sallian community.
“Parang lahat kami sobrang motivated and sobrang hungry na maglaro this season kasi nga we’re not just playing for ourselves, we’re not just playing for the Lady Spikers, for the coaches but for the whole La Sallian community,” Macandili added. “Na mabigyan namin ng sukli ‘yung suportang ibinibigay nila sa amin.”
The Lady Spikers will open their campaign on Saturday against University of Sto. Tomas at the Mall of Asia Arena.
