University of the East begins its bid for a second straight men's championship as it clashes with Ateneo Sunday in the UAAP Season 80 lawn tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
But the Red Warriors will go to war at 12 noon without reigning MVP AJ Lim, who is currently playing for the Philippine Davis Cup team against Indonesia in Jakarta.
Dolfo Barquin and Rogelio Estaño hope to end their collegiate careers with UE as champions, and once Lim returns to action next weekend, the Warriors will look formidable once again.
The Blue Eagles, meanwhile, are playing their second tie of the season. In Saturday's opener, Ateneo suffered a 1-4 defeat to De La Salle.
University of Santo Tomas, which lost to UE in last year's championship, bested University of the Philippines, 3-2, in the other tie.
The Growling Tigers shoot for a second straight win against the Green Tennisters at 8 a.m.
Women's division action opens today with last season's second placers UST taking on De La Salle at 8 a.m., followed by the UP-Ateneo tie at 12 noon.
National University, which dominated the lawn tennis competition in the previous seasons, is not fielding men's and women's teams for this year's tournament.
Most affected are the Lady Bulldogs, who will not able to defend their championship this season. Prior to this year, MVPs Tin and Clarice Patrimonio led NU to four consecutive crowns.
