Grand slam-seeking De La Salle University seeks revenge on their pre-season tournament tormentor University of Sto. Tomas in the opening day of the 80th UAAP women's volleyball tournament.
Defending champion De La Salle University will bring something extra when the Lady Spikers face an equally dangerous University of Sto. Tomas side Saturday in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament season-opener at the MOA Arena.
“Dahil natalo kami ng UST doon sa UniGames Final sobrang gigil kami na makaharap kaagad sila and makabawi dahil nga sa nangyari noong UniGames,” said DLSU graduating libero Dawn Macandili, recalling their five-set loss to the Tigresses in the championship round of the said pre-season tournament.
The Lady Spikers will use it as a motivation when they open their drive for a three-peat starting 4:00 p.m. in the duel that will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA on SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD on SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream.
DLSU swept the Tigresses last year in the elimination round and booted out the Espana-based squad in the Final Four.
But the Lady Spikers’ adjustment after the departure of setter Kim Fajardo will be put to the test against a retooled UST side, who despite losing hitter EJ Laure (shoulder injury) and middle blocker Ria Menenes (foregone last playing year) made a recruitment coup by landing 6-foot-1 Fil-Italian open spiker Milena Alessandrini.
Michelle Cobb’s composure and mental strength will get an early litmus test leading a crack crew composed of reigning Most Valuable Player Majoy Baron, Kim Kianna Dy, Desiree Cheng, Tin Tiamzon and Macandili.
“Siyempre starting the season we want to start right,” said the veteran defense specialist. “‘Yung makakilos kami ng maayos, makuha namin ang jive namin as a team.”
All eyes will be on Sisi Rondina, Dimdim Pacres, Carla Sandoval and Caitlyn Viray as well as on Alessandrini as Tigresses vowed to give a good performance to erase the dismal showing of their men’s basketball team in the center-piece event in the first semester.
“Ayaw naming mapahiya ang school kung saan kami nanggaling,” said Rondina, who is hoping to bring the success of her repeat conquest in beach volleyball to the indoor contest.
