Defending champion University of the East slipped past Ateneo, 3-2, to open its men's division campaign a positive note in the UAAP Season 80 lawn tennis tournament Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Dolfo Barquin and Joshua Kinaadman emerged victorious in singles play, while the doubles tandem of Rogelio Estaño and RJ Saga also shone for the Red Warriors.
Ino Canlas gave the lone singles win for the Blue Eagles, as well as Luke Flores and Erj Gatdula in doubles action.
UE began its campaign for a second straight title without reigning MVP AJ Lim, who is with the Philippine Davis Cup team in Jakarta, Indonesia.
But even without Lim, the Warriors were able to deliver.
In the other men's tie, University of Santo Tomas topped De La Salle, 3-2, to seize the solo lead with a 2-0 card.
The Growling Tigers swept the doubles behind the pair of Mark Cabahug and En-en Lopez, and Bernlou Bering and Warren Lagahit, while Dave Mosqueda provided the team's lone singles win.
The Green Tennisters fell at 1-1.
Lim expected to be back in action when UE takes on UST in a rematch of last year's Finals on Saturday.
Women's action saw last season's runner-up UST bested La Salle, 4-1.
Kendies Malinis and Erika Manduriao won their singles matches for the Tigresses, who also drew doubles victories from Precian Rivera and Genevieve Caorte, and Ingrid Gonzales and Danica Bautista.
Ateneo carved out a 4-1 win over University of the Philippines in the other tie.
