UAAP Season 80 Football: UP stuns defending champs Ateneo on opening day
JB Borlongan scored the lone goal to help UP take down reigning champions Ateneo in the opening day of the UAAP Season 80 men's football tournament
JB Borlongan scored the lone goal as University of the Philippines eked out a 1-0 win over defending champion Ateneo in the UAAP Season 80 men's football tournament Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Borlongan produced the winning moment for the Fighting Maroons, scoring from just outside the box in the 75th minute. It was a testy Katipunan derby to open the season, as the Blue Eagles finished the match with 10 men after Sam Lim was sent off in the 60th minute for a second yellow for his involvement in a scuffle, while reigning MVP Jarvey Gayoso and Fidel Tacardon were given yellow cards.
Earlier, Jasper Absalon converted a late second half goal as University of the East nipped National University, 1-0.
It was the Red Warriors' fourth straight win dating back from last season's late elimination run.
In the morning match, Marvin Bricenio netted a hat-trick as University of Santo Tomas overpowered Far Eastern University, 4-0, to gain full points.
Action resumes on Thursday at the same Malate venue, with the Thursday televised matches between De La Salle and Far Eastern University at 4 p.m., and UP and UE at 2 p.m. Adamson University and UST collide in the morning match at 9 a.m.
