UAAP VOLLEYBALL: Ateneo begins four-peat quest
Ateneo de Manila University faces Far Eastern University in an early test in its four-peat bid.

Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University begins its bid for a fourth straight title against Far Eastern University in the 80th UAAP men's volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena on Sunday.

Graduating four-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo will lead the march of the Blue Eagles at 10:00 a.m.

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines and University of the East battle at 8:00 a.m.

Both matches will air via livestream and on LIGA on SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD on SkyCable Channel 183.

National University and University of Sto. Tomas won their respective opening day assignments Saturday to share the top spot.

Ateneo swept all of their 16 games in the tournament last year to extend the Katipunan-based squad's reign to three straight years. The Oliver Almadro-mentored troop will enter the season riding the crest of its 30-game winning streak that started from their fourth game in Season 78.

But the Blue Eagles lost two key players last year after Rex Intal and Josh Villanueva graduated while Season 79 Finals Most Valuable Player 6-foot-8 Russian-American Tony Koyfman had academic problems.

Helping Espejo out are Karl Baysa, Gian Glorioso, Ishmael Rivera, Ron Medalla and Season 79 rookie of the year Chumason Njigha.

The Tams on the other hand will pin their hopes on Richard Solis, John Paul Bugaoan, Jude Garcia and national team member Peter Quiel.
