Ateneo de Manila University and Far Eastern University get an early rematch of last season's Final Four when the two teams collide on Sunday.
A rebuilding Ateneo de Manila University side gets an early acid test when the Lady Eagles battle the veteran-laden Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws Sunday in 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
Game time is at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA on SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD on SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream.
The Lady Eagles’ heartstrong mantra will be put to the test in probably one of the most challenging season for the Katipunan-based squad in almost a decade.
Ateneo is playing limp after losing key players following the departure of hitter Michelle Morente and Gizelle Tan, the decision of top setter Jia Morado to forego her last playing year, Jamie Lavitoria skipping the season because of academic problems and injuries sustained by Kim Gequillana and Ana Gopico during the offseason.
The Lady Eagles will pin its hopes on holdovers led by skipper Maddie Madayag, Bea De Leon, Kat Tolentino and Jho Maraguinot as they lead a rebuilding team against a seasoned Lady Tamaraws side in an early rematch of last year’s Final Four.
FEU lost Remy Palma after last season and will miss the supposedly last playing year of returning Rosemarie Vargas, who sustained a ruptured Achilles heel tendon.
But the Lady Tams, who will be handled by a new coach in George Pascua, still have enough firepower in their bid to end an 11-year title drought.
Bernadeth Pons, Jerrili Malabanan, Toni Rose Basas and middles Czarina Carandang and Jeanette Villareal are all expected to deliver for FEU.
