So napag-usapan namin na hopefully mangyari siya (opening day win) ngayon, ayun nangyari naman -- Bernadeth Pons on FEU's first win in a season-opener in five years
Bernadeth Pons bore witness to Far Eastern University’s season-opening woes.
Now on her last playing year with the Lady Tamaraws, the graduating open hitter made sure that the drought would end Sunday.
Pons provided an all-around effort to will the Morayta-based squad to a thrilling 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9, victory over Ateneo de Manila University in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
The star spiker delivered down the stretch, scoring 14 points with 12 off attacks while playing a vital role on FEU’s floor defense with 16 excellent receptions and 13 digs.
The victory snapped the five-year, opening day win drought of the Lady Tams. FEU’s last first game win was against University of the East back in Season 74.
“Sobrang happy. Napag-usapan din namin noong last set na in my past four years sa UAAP never pa kaming nanalo ng first game sa UAAP, ito pa lang ang first time sa pang fifth year ko na,” said Pons.
But the chance of clinching a debut match win looked bleak when FEU went behind, 1-2, in the match.
Working with Toni Rose Basas and Celine Domingo, Pons led the Lady Tams' blazing run in the fourth set to force a deciding frame.
FEU went into trouble early in the fifth frame, 1-6, before shocking the stunned Lady Eagles with a blistering rally. Pons pounded the down the line kills that pushed the Lady Tams at match point, 14-9.
“So napag-usapan namin na hopefully mangyari siya (opening day win) ngayon, ayun nangyari naman,” she said.
“A win is a win pa rin although madami pa rin kaming sobrang daming mga errors and lapses pero good thing naman is naka-recover kami,” Pons added. “Medyo slow start, I don’t know, good thing lang naka-recover.”
As an added bonus, the win ended FEU's losing slump to Ateneo since the second round of Season 75.
