UAAP VOLLEYBALL: UP sweeps UE in season opener
University of the Philippines made quick work of University of the East to open its campaign on a high note.
University of the Philippines took advantage of University of the East's poor service reception and miscues to fashion out a quick 25-22, 25-15, 25-13, victory Sunday in the 80th UAAP men's volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
The Fighting Maroons joined other opening day winners University of Sto. Tomas and National University after getting rid of the Red Warriors in just 76 minutes.
Skipper Gian San Pedro spearheaded UP with 12 points anchored on 10 attacks while Wendel Miguel and John Millete fired 11 markers each.
The Maroons nailed nine service aces and punished the Red Warriors with 32 kills while frustrating UE hitters with solid net defense that translated to eight kill blocks.
UP also received 26 free points off the Red Warriors errors.
Geric Ortega and Noel Alba had seven points each for UE, which dearly missed the services of ace hitter Edward Camposano who decided to bolt out of the team after three seasons.
