Joshua Umandal dropped 21 points in University of Sto. Tomas' five-set win over De La Salle University.
University of Sto. Tomas flirted with disaster before holding on in the extended fifth set against De La Salle University, 25-21, 25-16, 15-25, 23-25, 16-14, Saturday to start its campaign on the right foot in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
The Tigers squandered a two-set lead in the match and found themselves in trouble late in the fifth before banking on Joshua Umandal’s nerves of steel to pound the crucial point and getting the breaks of the game to emerge victorious in the two-hour match.
Umandal fired 21 points anchored on 20 attacks while Arnold Bautista and Jayvee Sumagaysay finished with 15 markers each for the Espana-based squad, who joined National University in the opening-day winners’ list.
Tyrone Carodan got 11 points while Manuel Medina posted 10 markers for UST, which unleashed 57 spikes orchestrated by Timothy Tanjanlangit’s 34 excellent sets.
The Tigers reached match point, 14-13, only to give DLSU a chance to equalize with Bautista commiting an error. Umandal put UST back on top with a booming down the line hit before Cris Dumago surrendered the match with an attack error.
Arjay Onia had 20 points, all from attacks, while Raymark Woo and Dumago closed their opening day with 15 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Green Spikers.
