UAAP VOLLEYBALL: NU faces Ateneo in early rematch
National University stakes its hold of the lead in an early rematch of last year's championship against Ateneo de Manila University.

National University shoots for a second straight win and firm grip of the lead in an early clash with last year's Finals tormentor defending three-time champion Ateneo de Manila University in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Game time is at 10:00 a.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA on SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD on SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream.

The Bulldogs are fresh off a 23-25, 19-25, 20-25, victory over Adamson University in their season opener last Saturday.

NU, which is looking to end a three-year title drought, is on a 12-game losing slump against the Blue Eagles. The Bulldogs’ last win over Ateneo was in Game 2 of the Season 76 Finals when they completed a series sweep for their second straight crown.  NU bowed to Ateneo in their next three championship meetings.

The Blue Eagles, on the other hand, absorbed its first loss in three seasons when Ateneo saw its 30-game winning streak snapped by Far Eastern University, 18-25, 19-25, 22-25, Sunday in a shocking upset.

Four-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo, who had 12 points in a lost cause, will try to bring the Blue Eagles in the win column with Karl Baysa, Gian Glorioso and Ish Rivera providing support against the NU troika of Bryan Bagunas, Fauzi Ismail and Kim Malanbunga.

Meanwhile, University of Sto. Tomas is also on the prowl for a second straight win after downing De La Salle University in a tight 25-21, 25-16, 15-25, 23-25, 16-14 win last Saturday.

The Tigers collide with University of the East, which is coming off 22-25, 13-25, 15-25, defeat at the hands of University of the Philippines Sunday, at 8:00 a.m.
