UAAP 80 Men’s Football: Late surge powers DLSU past FEU
Matthew Custodio (19) was one of three Green Archers to score in DLSU's 3-1 win over FEU.

Following a disappointing campaign in UAAP Season 79, the De La Salle Green Archers got of to a rousing start in Season 80 after using a strong second half showing to take down the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 3-1, Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Looking to bounce back from a 4-0 beatdown at the hands of UST on opening day, the Season 79 runners-up Tamaraws got on the board early, courtesy of third-year striker Rico Andes in the 22nd minute.

The Green Archers managed to answer back later in the half, with sophomore Matthew Custodio hitting the equalizer in the 35th minute.

While the start of the second half was tightly contested, it all broke down for FEU with thirteen minutes left in regulation, thanks to a partially deflected conversion from sophomore Chris Lawless in the 77th minute.

DLSU pulled even further away in the following minute, with Yoshi Koizumi blasting one in from outside the penalty box to make it a 3-1 Green Archers lead.

Following a nightmare campaign for DLSU last season which saw the perennial contender Archers finish in sixth place, the opening win was a step in the right direction for head coach Hans Smit and his boys. Still, the long-time DLSU mentor knows that there’s still a long way to go.

“I’ve never been in sixth place before. Yet again, the same. The target now is take it slow, it's the first game." Smit told ABS-CBN Sports. "Our target is to reach the Final Four. Hopefully, not #4, so we'll what happens.”

The Green Archers get the maximum three points in their season debut, while the Tamaraws, crash to two losses in their first two outings to remain scoreless in the season.
