Defending champion De La Salle University and University of the Philippines cross paths in a battle of unbeaten teams.
Grand slam-seeking De La Salle University and University of the Philippines collide for a share of the lead Saturday in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Opening serve is at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA on SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD on SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream.
The Lady Spikers survived an early challenge from University of Sto. Tomas, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8, a week ago.
Fielding a veteran core composed of reigning Most Valuable Player Majoy Baron, Kim Kianna Dy, Desiree Cheng, libero Dawn Macandi and with sophomore setter Michelle Cobb doing a great job filling in the shoes left by Kim Fajardo, DLSU remains to be the team to beat this season.
The Lady Spikers are also looking to avoid a repeat of their first round defeat against the Lady Maroons last year.
“Hindi ko pa nakikita lahat, kung baga nangangapa sa isa’t isa kasi di pa namin nakikita kung anong meron ang UP ngayon,” said DLSU head coach Ramil De Jesus.
“Although nawala dun si (Nicole) Tiamzon and si (Kathy) Bersola and yung libero si (Pia) Gaiser. So malaking bagay din yun para sa team nila.”
UP is also coming off a tough win over University of the East, 25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 16-25, 15-8, last Sunday.
“The challenge against La Salle, they have good service as well, so we just have to work on our passing and defense,” said Lady Maroons coach Godfrey Okumu. “But I respect their volleyball, they play good volleyball, but like them we are expecting good reesults from our next match.”
Diana Carlos, Isa Molde and Justine Dorog will be the Lady Maroons' main offensive weapons.
