University of Sto. Tomas stakes its unbeaten record and hold of the lead in a showdown with three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University.
University of Sto. Tomas hopes to keep a tight hold of the lead but will need to bring its A-game against three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University Sunday in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Baring their teeth in their first two games, the Tigers share the top spot with the only other unbeaten team Far Eastern University.
Game time is at 8:00 a.m. to be followed by National University’s duel with winless University of the East at 10:00 a.m.
Both games will air live on LIGA on SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD on SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream.
The duo of Joshua Umandal, who is averaging 16.5 points per game, and Arnold Bautista led UST to a 25-11, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, win over the Red Warriors last Wednesday.
But winning their third straight game will be an uphill climb.
The Tigers dropped their last four meetings with the Blue Eagles. UST’s last win over Ateneo was in Season 77 when the Espana-based squad completed an elims sweep over the Blue Eagles.
After a terrible season-opener that saw Ateneo’s 30-game winning streak snapped in straight sets by FEU, the Blue Eagles rebounded mightily with a 26-24, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19 win over bitter rival Bulldogs.
Four-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo rediscovered his old dangerous form when he fired 24 points the last time out.
Meanwhile, NU is in search of a bounce back win against a UE side that is on a lookout for its first win after losing two straight games.
