It was quite the birthday performance for Jarvey Gayoso, who finished with a goal, two assists, and more importantly, the win.
Jarvey Gayoso was greeted by a cake and song as he went back up to the stands to greet his friends and family in attendance at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The reigning UAAP men’s football MVP was celebrating his 21st birthday after their first round matchup against National University.
Aside from another year of life, Jarvey was also celebrating their first win of the season.
Against the Bulldogs, Gayoso found his touch once again as he finished with two assists, as well as the momentum-changing go-ahead goal to give the Ateneo Blue Eagles their first win of the UAAP Season 80 men’s football season.
“I’m very satisfied with the way I played,” Gayoso said following the match. “it's a special day for me, and I wanted it to be extremely special by giving a good performance today.”
Apparently, the mini-celebration for Jarvey after the match was planned, and while Ateneo head coach JP Merida knew about it, he didn’t tell his star striker about it, so as not to distract him from they main goal of the day: get the three points.
“May mga nagtext sa akin last night na may mga suprises sila, pero hindi ko muna pinapakita kay Jarvey.” Merida said.
Good thing Jarvey was in MVP-mode.
“I’m happy sa performance niya kanina even na hindi ko siya kinausap regarding sa birthday niya, para hindi din siya ma-pressure.” Merida added. “I’m happy kasi andami, nag-step up, grabe yung initiative niya sa taas, sinasabi namin palagi na kailangan mag-ready kasi iccheck talaga siya every game.”
More importantly, it was a good way to bounce back for the defending champions, who lost to Katipunan rivals University of the Philippines on opening day.
And while there were still some lapses to be addressed, Gayoso says that the performance was a remdinder of how good the defending champions can be.
“I think that it's uplifting that we were able to bounce back from that loss against UP. We still have a lot of mistakes in this game, but we're learning from it, and the opportunities that were given to us, the goals that were given to us, it's just a reminder that we can still perform better. “
