Defending champions Ateneo de Manila got their first win of the season at the expense of the NU Bulldogs
Defending champions Ateneo de Manila came back from a goal down to soar past National University, 3-1, in the UAAP Season 80 men's football tournament, Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
NU struck first, with Jekar Sullano scoring in just the sixth minute to put pressure on the defending champs, who are coming off an opening day loss to University of the Philippines.
The Blue Eagles would respond before the end of the first half, with reigning MVP and birthday boy Jarvey Gayoso finding Rupert Baña for the equalizer in the 31st minute, followed by a go-ahead conversion from Gayoso himself just a minute later.
Jeremiah Rocha added to the Ateneo lead in the second half with a 52nd minute conversion to make it a 3-1 lead.
Down two goals, NU tried pushing the pace in the remaining minutes of the match, but could not mount any offense.
Ateneo had a couple more chances to add to their advantage, but couldn't convert any more as well.
"I was happy sa result, pero before mag-kick off yung NU game, from our last four to five possessions, hindi namin makuha yung confidence sa finishing," Ateneo head coach JP Merida bared, following the match. "Yung team ko medyo frustrated sa training, isa rin yun sa worry ko kanina, then suddenly nag-concede kami ng one goal, pero good na maganda yung comeback nung team, after we scored, we got agad the second goal."
The Blue Eagles improve to a win and a loss for three points.
NU drops to two losses in as many matches for zero points.
