Four-peat-seeking Ateneo de Manila University snatched its second straight win in three games.
Three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University regained its old, dangerous form and that means trouble for the rest of the field.
After a hiccup to start the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament, the Blue Eagles sparked a winning streak when Ateneo easily rolled past erstwhile unbeaten University of Sto. Tomas, 25-22, 25-15, 25-23, Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Ateneo moved up to second to third place with 2-1 win-loss record tied with their victim behind unblemished Far Eastern University (2-0), which handed the Blue Eagles their opening day loss that snapped the squad’s 30-game winning streak since Season 78.
Four-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo paced Ateneo with 16 points and was backstopped by Ron Medalla, who contributed with 13 markers off 11 spikes, a block and an ace.
The Tigers had their chance of sealing the first and third sets but the Blue Eagles’ composure and veteran smarts prevailed as UST faded at crunch time.
Ateneo broke a 22-22 deadlock in the third set with an off speed attack by Espejo. UST tied it again at 23 but Joshua Umandal’s attack was turned back by Blue Eagles setter Ish Polvorosa before the Tigers hitter put too much power on his next attack that sent it long as Ateneo walked away with the straight sets win.
Arnold Bautista and Manuel Medina finished 12 and 10 points, respectively, for UST.
