Ateneo de Manila University ended a two-game slide with an exciting four-set escape over University of Sto. Tomas.
Ateneo de Manila University arrested a two-game slide, coming back from a set down to steal a 16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23, victory over University of Sto. Tomas Sunday in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles captured its first win in three games to tie their victims.
Bea De Leon, Kat Tolentino and Jho Marguinot scored 11 points each while Season 79 Rookie of the Year Jules Samonte finished with 10 markers for Ateneo, which overcame another explosive outing by UST star Sisi Rondina. Tolentino and Maraguinot smashed nine kills each while skipper Maddie Madayag scored four kill blocks in her nine-point outing for the Lady Eagles, who put a stop on their worst start in 11 years.
Ateneo overhauled a 12-17 deficit in the fourth set with a blistering run to take a 24-21 lead. Rondina tried to will UST back as the Tigresses saved two straight match points but Bea De Leon completed the match comeback with an off the block kill.
The Lady Eagles turned the tables around in the third set when Ateneo overhauled a 14-19 deficit with a scorching 7-1 rally to take the helm 21-20. UST regained the lead, 22-21, on an error by Lady Eagles rookie libero Dani Ravena but the Tigresses crumbled under pressure committing three straight attack errors from Shanen Palec, Fil-Italian rookie Milena Alessandrini and Rondina before Jules Samonte sealed the set with an off the block kill for Ateneo.
The Tigresses lost starting libero Rica Rivera early in the opening frame after sustaining a meniscus tear on her right knee. With its defensive specialist down, UST used it as a rallying point to pull away to take the first set.
Ateneo held on to stave off the Tigresses comeback attempt in the second frame to equalize.
Rondina fired 22 points off 19 attacks and three of UST's 15 aces while Alessandrini had 11 markers despite nursing a shoulder injury. Tin Francisco got 10 points for the Tigresses.
