Ateneo can say it has 42 percent of the 12 best individual performers in the UAAP 80 Juniors Basketball Tournament
Ateneo de Manila High School’s dominance in the UAAP 80 Juniors Basketball Tournament cannot be contained in the standings.
After completing a clean sweep of the elimination round just a day ago, the Blue Eaglets can now count three of their players as members of the Mythical Team.
Towering teen Kai Sotto, court general SJ Belangel, and versatile wing Dave Ildefonso all finished in the top five in terms of Statistical Points (SPs).
Sotto was second with 70.21 SPs and averages of 12.9 points 57.4 percent shooting, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks; Belangel was third with 68.86 SPs and per game counts of in 17.2 points 52.3 percent shooting, 5.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.7 steals and Ildefonso was fifth with 64.21 SPs and per game counts of in 13.1 points 44 percent shooting, 8.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.1 steals.
They join MVP CJ Cansino of University of Sto. Tomas and L-Jay Gonzales of Far Eastern University-Diliman.
Ateneo’s three Mythical selections have been key cogs in their dominant run in the tournament thus far with all but one of their 14 wins coming by double-digits.
With Sotto, Belangel, and Ildefonso leading the way, the kids from Katipunan have marched all the way to an outright berth in the Finals.
It’s not just those three who have been doing the heavy lifting for the Blue Eaglets, however.
Proving just how stacked they are, Joaqui Manuel and Jason Credo also made the Top 12 in terms of SPs.
Yes, that means that Ateneo can boast of having 42 percent of the 12 best individual performers.
If that’s not a recipe for success, we don’t know what is.
