UST's CJ Cansino is the hands-down MVP of the UAAP 80 Juniors Basketball Tournament
Not even University of Sto. Tomas’ second round struggles could keep CJ Cansino away from the top spot of individual players in the UAAP 80 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
The King Tiger Cubs’ massive lead in terms of Statistical Points (SPs) held firm and he is poised to hoist the MVP trophy in two weeks’ time. “Sobrang saya ko po. ‘Di ko po in-expect na kaya ko pala,” he expressed after hearing the news.
Cansino wound up the elimination round with 88.43 SPs built on per game counts of 24.6 points in 43 percent shooting, 12.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.4 steals and nearly a block.
With that, the difference between him and his closest competitor is 18 points.
That actually whittled down from a whopping 26-point lead after the first round.
That’s because the do-it-all swingman and his team have only won twice in their last seven games.
Still, they came through in their biggest game of the season, downing Far Eastern University-Diliman last Sunday to stay alive for a playoff berth.
UST disputes that fourth and final semifinals spot with Adamson High School on Wednesay at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.
Leading them into battle will be the newly-minted MVP who is determined to extend his playing career in the Juniors. “Dagdag motivation poi to. Ibibigay ko po ulit lahat ng best ko to win,” he expressed.
Cansino is Espana’s first Juniors MVP since Kevin Ferrer – and just its second in the last 16 years.
Finishing as runner-up is Ateneo de Manila High School’s towering teen Kai Sotto who had 70.21 SPs.
Also in the Mythical Team are Blue Eaglets SJ Belangel and Dave Ildefonso and L-Jay Gonzales of Far Eastern University-Diliman.
