Collegiate rivals Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University collide on the pitch for the first time this season as the Men’s Football Tournament of UAAP Season 80 rolls on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Coming off their first win of the season, defending champions Ateneo look to keep their momentum going as they face off against a rejuvenated Green Archers squad.

“Kung titignan natin, La Salle had a good start, yung frontline players nila ang worry ko ngayon, yung size, of course we need to be ready,” said Ateneo head coach JP Merida.

Ateneo came back from a goal down to beat National University, 3-1, last Sunday, behind a spirited performance from birthday boy Jarvey Gayoso, who had his hand in all three of the defending champions’ goals, scoring one and assisting on the other two.

Speaking of momentum, the Green Archers are riding a ton of momentum heading into this rivalry matchup.

After their win over last season’s runners-up FEU a week ago, the Green Archers followed up with a dominant 2-0 win over Adamson University, Sunday.

“It’s just another team. We’ll just play the same way we trained for.” said DLSU head coach Hans-Peter Smit. “There’s nothing special with any other team, just like us, there’s nothing special. It’s just whoever wants to win more, who has brought their A-game, and who wants to finish the game on a high note.”

Ateneo and DLSU kick off at 4:00 PM.

In the morning game, another squad looks to remain unbeaten in the season as University of the Philippines meets Adamson University.

The Fighting Maroons are riding high off their hot start, winning their first two matches against Ateneo and University of the East.

The Soaring Falcons on the other hand try to get their first win of the season after back-to-back losses against University of Santo Tomas and DLSU.

UP and Adamson kick off at 9:00 AM.

In the first televised matchup of the day, UST guns for their third straight victory against a struggling NU side.

After getting bounced by eventual champions Ateneo in the Season 79 semis, the Growling Tigers are off to an impressive start, already scoring wins over FEU and Adamson.

The same can’t be said for the Bulldogs, who after nearly making the playoffs a season ago, find themselves struggling and losing both of their first matches against UE and Ateneo.

UST and NU kick off at 2:00 PM.
