After getting booted out by eventual champions Ateneo de Manila in the semifinals during UAAP Season 79, the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers are off to a hot start, winning their first two contests in dominant fashion.

After blasting runners-up Far Eastern University 4-0 on opening day, the Espanya-based side took down Adamson, 3-0.

Someone who’s had a hand in both of UST’s victories so far is senior Marvin Bricenio.

The graduating midfielder has scored four times in the last two games, including a hat trick in their big win over FEU.

“Syempre graduating ako, gusto ko ito last season, ibubuhos ko makakaya ko.” Bricenio said after their second win of the season. “Gusto naming umabot sa championship, kaya gusto ko goal o mag-assist man lang para makatulong sa team, atsaka manalo every game.”

Aside from hoping to end his UAAP career with some hardware, “Hapon” - as he’s affectionately called by his teammates - sees his final year with UST as a chance to showcase what he’s capable of on the pitch to open some doors in the professional level.

“After graduating, gusto ko maging professional football player sa PFL. Gusto ko sumali, yun ang pangarap po.”

The Filipino Japanese booter already had a stint with PFL club Global Cebu FC, but of course, constant improvement leads to job security, and that’s what Bricenio is aiming for.

“Gusto ko i-push ang sarili ko para gumaling every game. Gusto kong ipakita sa lahat na nag-gogoal ako or nag-aassist.”

Before he focuses on his post-college aspirations however, Bricenio and the Growling Tigers have their sights set on bringing a UAAP football crown back to Espanya for the first time since UAAP Season 69.

UST looks to improve to three wins in as many games this season when they take on the struggling National University Bulldogs on Thursday, February 15th.
