UAAP Season 80 Men's Football: Ateneo tops DLSU in thriller
Jarvey Gayoso scored a brace to lead Ateneo past DLSU, 2-1, Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium

Reigning MVP Jarvey Gayoso netted two goals in the second half to power defending champions Ateneo de Manila over collegiate rivals DLSU, 2-1, in UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football action, Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

After a tightly-contested first half that saw neither side give up any conversions, Gayoso went to work and put Ateneo on the board in the 50th minute after shaking off the Green Archer defenses and firing one off from just outside the penalty box.

Gayoso struck again in the 66th minute, catching a volley from Enzo Ceniza, resetting, and then letting it fly in between two DLSU defenders to make it a 2-0 Ateneo lead.

With less than ten minutes left in regulation, DLSU pushed the action and substitute Mauro Acot managed to pull one back in the 83rd minute to cut DLSU’s deficit to just one.

The hoping to avoid their first loss of the season, the Green Archers desperately tried to find an equalizer, but couldn’t produce one, as Ateneo held on for the victory.

"Playing against La Salle is one of the motivations when we play," said Ateneo head coach JP Merida. "Talagang goal namin is to motivate the players, and nakuha nila ito."

While the Blue Eagles came away victorious in a gritty matchup against DLSU, Merida still sees areas for improvement in his boys, but pointed out that after back-to-back wins, the defending champions have gotten their consistency back.

"Talagang maraming nakuhang mga adjustment dito, bumabalik lang talaga sa mga ginawa namin, so maganda lang from this game, nakuha namin is to be consistent."

Ateneo improves to two wins and a loss for six points in the season, while DLSU drops to an identical two win, one loss record for six points.
