(Kung) mabibigay sa akin 'yung bola, papatayin at papatayin ko. Walang hesitation -- Jaja Santiago
Jaja Santiago was put on a leash with National University trailing defending two-time champion De La Salle University by four points in the closing stretch of the fifth set.
Sitting on the bench after rotating at the back row, the graduating hitter could only just pray for her teammates to hold the fort.
“Siyempre kinakabahan ako pero kino-compose ko pa rin ang sarili ko na hindi, kahit wala ako sa loob, makukuha namin ito,” said Santiago. “Kung maabot ako sa unahan, ibibigay ko ang 100-plus percent ko para sa team.”
The Lady Spikers made a grave mistake of giving NU a chance to get the 6-foot-5 Santiago back on court.
Once inside, Santiago erupted with crucial kills to carry the Lady Bulldogs to a 26-24, 19-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14, win Sunday in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Santiago submitted 27 points anchored on a crisp 20-of-43 attacking clip but heroics down the stretch highlighted her performance that helped the Lady Bulldogs preserve their pristine 4-0 win-loss record.
NU trailed DLSU, 8-12, in the fifth set with Santiago substituted to the bench. Aiko Urdas’ kill put Santiago back on the floor and the hitter worked her magic to shock DLSU.
Santiago pounded a kill to put NU at match point, 14-13. Kim Kianna Dy answered with a hit before Santiago gave the Lady Bulldogs their second match point off a thunderous spike.
Urdas sealed the morale-boosting win with a service ace.
Asked if she took it to herself to provide the much-needed points, Santiago responded with authority.
“(Kung) mabibigay sa akin 'yung bola, papatayin at papatayin ko. Walang hesitation,” she said.
