Sila ang dumiskarte -- Castillo on Santiago-Nabor connection
Sila ang gumawa eh. Dumidiskarte na sila, dumiskarte si Jasmine, si Jaja -- NU coach Babes Castillo

National University head coach Babes Castillo has nothing but praises for his prized setter Jasmine Nabor and graduating ace spiker Jaja Santiago.

The duo gave another stellar performance to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a dramatic 26-24, 19-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14, win over the erstwhile unbeaten grand slam-seeking De La Salle University in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Santiago was crisp with her hits, scoring 27 points in NU’s fourth victory in as many games that tightened its grip of the solo lead.

The Lady Bulldogs also relied on the leadership of Nabor as she orchestrated the fluid offense of NU with 53 excellent sets. NU feasted on her excellent setups to score 55 attack points.

“Sila ang gumawa eh. Dumidiskarte na sila, dumiskarte si Jasmine, si Jaja,” said Castillo. “Pag nagko-command si Jasmine, sunod lahat.”

With the pair leading the way, NU registered its best start in years, surpassing its 3-0 start last season.

The Lady Bulldogs survived its second five-setter match after outlasting Ateneo de Manila University on February 7.

"Parang sinasabi ko lang na tibayan ang depensa, iangat lang (ang bola sa receive) at adjust-adjust ang mga spiker. Hindi kami papayag na matatalo kami sa game na 'to," said Nabor.

NU went down 8-12 in the fifth set with Santiago on the bench after her back row position on their rotation. The Lady Bulldogs fought back and with Santiago moving at the front row unleashed a vicious attack to push NU at match point, 14-13. DLSU saved a match point but Santiago pounded a thunderous kill to put the Lady Bulldogs back on top before Aiko Urdas sealed the win with an ace.

“I’m happy they were able to overcome it. Sa odds at odds lang, medyo mahihirapan kami kasi sampu lang kami,” said Castillo. “Pero I think yung past training namin nakita ko ang determination nila, dedication when they were training. Hindi lang sila uma-aksyon, nag-iisip pa. Today na-dagdag nila ang heart, yung puso nila.”

The Lady Bulldogs will take on University of Sto. Tomas next week.
