Steven Anotado scored his first goal since coming back from injury to help UST beat Ateneo, 1-0.
A late goal from the returning Steven Anotado was all that was needed as University of Santo Tomas got the better of defending champions Ateneo de Manila, 1-0, in UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football action, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
UST controlled the pace for much of the contest, pushing the action on offense while containing the Blue Eagles on defense, especially managing to keep reigning MVP Jarvey Gayoso tightly guarded.
Late in the second half, AJ Pasion connected with Anotado, who punched in the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute to give the Growling Tigers the 1-0 lead.
In the dying moments of the match, Gayoso had a golden opportunity to pull even but ended up sending his attempt over the crossbar and UST held on for the victory.
“Sobrang saya ko ngayon kasi siyempre kasi first goal ko.” said Anotado, who missed the last two UAAP seasons due to a couple of ACL injuries.
UST head coach Marjo Allado also noted that they addressed what was needed to be improved following their draw against NU in their last outing.
“We learned from the last game against NU, kasi we start slow, sabi namin sa players namin ngayon, kung ganyan yung laro natin, mahihirapan tayo pumasok sa semis.”
“Yung motivation dito is when you play against Ateneo, i-ano lang natin yung mga key players nila, like si Gayoso, wag pasipain sa goal, si Ceniza wag pa-pasahin kasi yun yung magaling. So far yung boys naman motivated, gusto manalo against Ateneo, well naka-silat kami ng isang goal, and nag-thank you ako sa effort na binigay ng lahat ng players sa 90 minutes.”
As for Anotado, Allado says he’s happy to see his striker finally get one in after two years of being sidelined.
“Si Anotado kasi malapitin sa goal, as I’ve said before. Happy ako, kahit yung mga teammates niya na naka-goal siya ngayon, kasi after two years na off siya sa football dahil sa dalawang ACL niya, ngayon naka-goal na siya, so yung pangalan niya binabalik na niya slowly dito sa UAAP.”
UST improves to three wins and a draw for ten points, while Ateneo drops to two wins and two losses for six points.
