It’s evident naman na nagi-improve rin -- Ateneo skipper Maddie Madayag on the Lady Eagles turnaround after a bad start
Ateneo de Manila University skipper Maddie Madayag gave her team a passing grade after winning their third straight match but admitted that they still have a lot to work on as the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament progresses.
After going down 0-2 to open their campaign – the school’s worst in 11 years, the Lady Eagles rediscovered their form and are on a three-game roll.
The Katipunan-based squad outlasted Adamson University, 25-18, 14-25, 25-18, 15-25, 15-10, Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan to climb to 3-2 win-loss record.
“Mga C+ (ang grade ng team),” said Madayag when asked on her assessment of the rebuilding team that lost key players after last season including setter Jia Morado and hitter Michelle Morente.
The fourth year middle blocker, who torched the Lady Falcons with 14 points including four kill blocks, pointed out that they still need to address their mindset and reception.
“Nawawala sa focus especially kapag nagkakamali yung team namin,” she added. “Nawawala sa focus, di na masyado nakakapuntos, at saka receive talaga.”
“’Yun naman talaga yung problema namin ever since pero we’re working on it,” she added. “And obviously it’s evident naman na nagi-improve rin.”
Ateneo won a five-set match for the first time after dropping their first two games that went the full distance against Far Eastern University and National University.
The Lady Eagles also reasserted their mastery over the Lady Falcons for the 11th straight meeting since Season 75.
Overall, Madayag praised her team’s resilience and the way they lived up to their heartstrong and happy, happy mantra.
“Of course naman, sino namang hindi (masaya sa sunod-sunod na panalo)?” she said. “Sobrang nakakasaya din naman na pataas nang pataas yung level naman ng team.”
