The UP Fighting Maroons used their signature defense to get by the NU Bulldogs, 2-0, in the UAAP Season 80 Football tournament at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium late Thursday afternoon.
Forward Kintaro Miyagi scored his fifth goal of the season, tapping it soflty inside the goal after Ian Clarino's attempt went the other way, which landed on Miyagi's direction in the 23rd minute to create a 2-0 advantage for the league leaders.
Earlier, rookie Fidel Tacardon scored his first-ever UAAP goal, cutting his way through the penalty box and the NU defense, scoring the short-distance goal for a 1-0 lead, midway through the fourth minute of action.
UP obtained a big blow as sophomore Ray Sanciangco was carried off the pitch in a stretcher after suffering an apparent right knee injury in the 15th minute.
The severity of Sanciangco's injury is not yet known, but it is suspected to be a twisted knee cap, which may result in an early end in his promising season.
UP did not score another goal in the second half, but whether it was a direct effect of the Sanciangco injury, UP head coach Anto Gonzales was not sure.
"I don't think so. They responded with a goal. I didn't know it hindi pa nag-sink in at the time, and then during halftime, I don't know."
NU's biggest chance of scoring a goal was thwarted in the 62nd minute, when UP goalkeeper Anton Yared denied a close shot attempted by an NU player.
Due to the win, UP sits alone at the top of the UAAP men's football standings with 13 points (4 wins - 1 draw, 0 losses). NU meanwhile sits erstwhile with four (1 win - 1 draw, 3 losses)
"I thought we played a good first half. Second half, we made a lot of lapses sa backline. At least Anton [Yared] was able to save a few attempts," Gonzales added.
