UAAP VOLLEYBALL: Vicente left UE because of 'personal reasons'
Si coach Francis, nag-leave lang siya personally. Sabi lang niya sa amin, personal reason. So we didnít bother to (ask) Ďano yun, ano yung dahilan? -- UE interim coach Rod Roque on Francis Vicente's reason for stepping down as Lady Warriors' mentor
Francis Vicente left his post as head coach of the University of the East women’s volleyball team because of personal reasons.
Athletic director and interim coach Rod Roque of the Lady Warriors told reporters Saturday that Vicente left the team Thursday in the middle of the ongoing UAAP Season 80 citing the said reason.
UE accepted his resignation and Roque, who steered the Junior Warriors to eight of their 11 straight titles in the UAAP, took the rein.
“Si coach Francis, nag-leave lang siya personally. Sabi lang niya sa amin, personal reason. So we didn’t bother to (ask) ‘ano yun, ano yung dahilan?” said Roque, whose wards dropped a 20-25, 17-25, 26-24, 22-25, match against Far Eastern University at the Far Eastern University.
Vicente, also the national women’s team coach, parted ways with the team after three and a half seasons, leaving with a 2-45 win-loss record.
His last game was last Wednesday in a straight sets loss to two-time defending champion De La Salle University. It was UE’s fifth straight defeat prior to Roque’s debut setback at the hands of FEU.
“Nirerespeto namin ‘yung gusto niya. So gusto niyang personal reason, then yun yung sasabihin namin to everybody na gustong malaman,” said Roque. “Wag na nating halungkatin pa.”
UE’s men’s volleyball team coach Sammy Acaylar also stepped down from his post Friday citing conflict with his commitment as newly-appointed athletic director of University of Perpetual Help in the NCAA.
Roque also serves as interim coach of the men’s squad.
The UE official said that the management already has a list of coaches that they wanted to take over the men’s and women’s team but might hire them after the season ends.
“Actually we have coaches in mind already but then again yung timing eh. It has to be perfect timing because may commitment pa yung mga iba na nasa isip naming,” said Roque.
For the meantime, Roque will call the shot for both squads for the rest of the season.
“Siympre mahirap because people might expect miracle. Sabi ko naman sa management when they told me, sabi ko don’t expect miracle because miracle doesn’t happen overnight,” he said. “So I’ll try to do my best that I can do for the team. Two days pa lang naman ako.”
