De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila posted contrasting victories to stay in joint second on Saturday in the men's division of the UAAP Season 80 lawn tennis tournament.
The Green Tennisters subdued University of the Philippines, 4-1, while the Blue Eagles nipped University of Santo Tomas, 3-2, as the two fierce rivals rose to 3-2.
Betto Orendain prevailed over Kyle Joseph, 6-4, 6-0, LA Canizares overcame a tough second set to beat Joshua Cano, 6-2, 7-6, while Kyle Parpan turned back Joel Atienza, 6-3, 6-1, for De La Salle to complete its singles sweep.
Qoqo Allian and Jonah Cano won a tight straight set affair over Vincent Alanis and Auden Paduganan, 6-4, 6-4, in the first doubles for the Green Tennisters.
The Fighting Maroons were able to fend off a shoutout, as Elijah Arevalo and Mimo Tomacruz won over Hans Asistio and Raphael Teng, 6-4, 7-6, in the second doubles.
Luke Flores and Erj Gatdula held on to a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mark Cabahug and Jaffary Carida, in the second doubles to seal the deal for Ateneo.
The Eagles won the first two singles matches, as Ino Canlas blanked Joel Librodo, 6-0, and Marcen Gonzales bested Dave Mosqueda, 7-6, 6-1.
The Growling Tigers were able to level as Christian Lopez defeated Bong Gonzales, 6-1, 6-0, in the third singles, and the pair of Bernlou Baring and Dominique Lanzado downed Julian Dayrit and Anton Punzalan, 6-2, 6-2, in the first doubles.
Defending champion UE, which swept all of its four first round ties, drew an opening day bye and will face UST in a rematch of last year's Finals at 12 noon Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The Tigers fell at 2-3, while the Maroons are still winless in five ties.
