Zyrus Capellan (21) was one of two Bulldogs to score as NU tamed FEU for their second win of the season.
Two conversions in the second half powered National University past Far Eastern University, 2-0, in UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football action, Sunday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field.
Following a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs picked up steam less than ten minutes into the second frame as Sean Epili found the back of the net in the 51st minute to put NU ahead.
A strike from just inside the penalty box from Zyrus Capellan in the 67th minute doubled the Bulldogs’ lead and put a ton of pressure on the undermanned Tamaraws.
FEU star striker Rico Andes, who didn’t start the match due to an injury, was forced to sub into the match in the second half to try and jumpstart the Tams’ offense.
The prolific scorer was unable to make any difference however, as the Bulldogs clamped down in FEU on defense.
The home side had a golden opportunity to pull one back late in the second half after John Renz Saldivar managed to draw an NU foul inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick for FEU.
Skipper Audie Menzi however sent the attempt sailing above the crossbar, much to the dismay of the FEU faithful in attendance.
“At least improving, ano?” NU head coach Mari Aberasturi said following the win. “Mahirap kasi, coming from a 2-0 loss against UP, mahirap talaga pero at least makikita yung plano, dahan-dahan nang nakukuha ng players. One game at a time.”
Aberasturi added that getting a win over a team the caliber of FEU is going to be a big boost in morale, especially after their loss to UP.
“Mataas, mataas, kasi yung FEU, they’re really a good team, very experienced players ang mga naglalaro diyan. A win against them, siyempre mag-boboost yan sa confidence ng mga bata.”
“Maybe today, we just played better football than them, but nevertheless they’re a very good team, a respectable team.” Aberasturi added.
NU improves to two wins, a draw and two losses for seven points in the season.
FEU continues to struggle as they fall to one win, one draw, and three losses for four points.
