National University preserved its unbeaten record.
Not even the explosive Sisi Rondina and the fierce University of Sto. Tomas could stop the rampaging National University.
Jaja Santiago and Rondina engaged in an entertaining shootout late in fourth set but the Lady Bulldogs prevailed in an exciting match between powerhouse teams, 25-19, 14-25, 25-19, 28-26, Sunday in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
NU grabbed its fifth straight win in as many games to keep its tight grip of the solo lead and exacted revenge on the same team that booted them out in the Final Four berth race last season.
Santiago scored 19 points with 16 coming off kills while Aiko Urdas got 10 markers for the Lady Bulldogs. Roselyn Doria and Audrey Paran posted nine markers each for NU, which got 32 excellent sets from Jasmine Nabor.
“Actually sinabi namin na ‘yung katulad lang ng game namin sa La Salle na ‘wag namin sabayan ‘yung pace ng kabila kasi ang nangyayari pinagmamadali kami and then kami naman sumasabay,” said Santiago. “So sabi ko lang gawin natin ‘yung pace natin, balik tayo doon sa game plan natin, kailangan natin mag-connect sa bawat isa.”
The Lady Bulldogs went up, 24-22, in the fourth set but a service error of Roselyn Doria followed by a Rondina through the block hit off the hands of Santiago tied it at 24.
Santiago smashed a kill but Rondina answered with a spike of her own. Audrey Paran overcooked her attack that gave UST a taste of set point advantage before Santiago knotted it again at 26.
A costly error by the Tigresses put NU back on top before Risa Sato sealed the match by stopping Rondina with a solid kill block.
UST fell to 2-3 slate.
Rondina unleashed 245 points while Carla Sandoval had 12 points for the Tigresses, who gave away 35 points off errors.
