Without a doubt, this Ateneo team can make a case of being the most dominant high school team ever assembled
Kai Sotto, SJ Belangel, and Dave Ildefonso – all from Ateneo de Manila High School – stood alongside CJ Cansino and L-Jay Gonzales on Tuesday to make up the Mythical Team of the UAAP 80 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
With 70.21 Statistical Points (SPs) on averages of 12.9 points 57.4 percent shooting, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks. towering teen Sotto was the runner-up to Season MVP Cansino.
Third in the MVP race was then court general Belangel who had 68.86 SPs on per game counts of in 17.2 points 52.3 percent shooting, 5.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.7 steals.
Versatile wing Ildefonso then came at fifth with 64.21 SPs and per game counts of in 13.1 points 44 percent shooting, 8.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.1 steals.
All three were more than worthy members of the Mythical Team officially announced at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
All three were key cogs in the Blue Eaglets’ machine that is one win away from a season sweep.
They definitely weren’t alone, however, as Katipunan also had much-welcome contributions from the likes of Jason Credo and Joaqui Manuel.
Manuel averaged 10.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists for 59.50 SPs while Credo normed 9.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.6 steals for 53.36 SPs.
Those numbers were more than enough to put them in the Top 12 in terms of SPs.
That means that Ateneo boasts of having 42 percent of the 12 best individual players in the entire league.
And if Manuel and Credo were given a bigger load, they may have also made their own case for the Mythical 5.
Even Blue Eaglets mentor Joe Silva says so. “Jason Credo and Joaqui Manuel, maybe they’re being overshadowed kasi medyo malakas yung team namin kaya they don’t get their numbers,” he said.
He also added, “Pero versatility-wise and value to the team, they have been big for us.”
