National University has just made sure that there will be a Final Four in the 80th Season of the UAAP Men’s Volleyball Tournament.
Bryan Bagunas was unstoppable at the net as the Bulldogs blitzed formerly undefeated Far Eastern University in four sets, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, and 25-17 on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Bagunas totaled 22 points, all but three coming from spikes, and had three other teammates in double-digits backstopping him. “Ngayon, ang nangyari, yung service namin maganda kaya nakakaatake kami,” head coach Dante Alinsunurin said.
James Natividad scored 15 points of his own while Fauzi Ismail and Francis Saura also added 11 markers apiece to help their team become the first mark on the loss column of the Tamaraws.
In all, NU had 56 spikes and hammered each and every one of those as their opponents only had 19 digs to show for all their effort.
After giving up the first set to FEU, the Bulldogs quickly regrouped and took the next three sets in dominant fashion.
Come the fourth set, they were rolling and went on a telling 10-3 run to increase a one-point margin into an eight-point lead, 15-7, they would never relinquish.
Behind their biggest win of the season, Alinsunurin’s wards now find themselves at 5-1 and in a three-way tie for the top spot along with the Tamaraws and three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University. Talking about the competition in the season, the mentor said, “Ngayon, ‘di tulad nang dati na alam kung anong mangyayari, lahat laban-laban.”
Still very much in the running despite their very first setback are the Tamaraws who were led in this one by JP Bugaoan and his 14 points.
