UP's blocking was on point against UST as they returned to winning form
Putting up a rock solid wall for majority of the match, the University of the Philippines hindered the return to the win column of University of Sto. Tomas with a five-set win, 25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 25-19, and 15-12 on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Tallying a total of 15 blocks, it was instead the Fighting Maroons who barged back into the winners’ circle in the UAAP 80 Men’s Volleyball Tournament following a four-game skid.
John Mark Millette top-scored for State U with 18 points while Wendel Miguel and Gian San Pascual chipped in 16 markers each.
“Nandun yung parang natatakot sila, but I asked them kanina, ‘Anong nararamdaman ninyong takot? You tell me kasi the more na nasasabi niyo yan, the more na male-lessen yun,’” first-year mentor Hans Chuacuco said after his boys improved to an overall 2-4 standing.
Indeed, UP stood strong in the face of their playoff hopeful opponents.
And in the end, it was their stout blocking, led by San Pascual’s four and JM Castillo’s six blocks, that boosted them past the dangerous Growling Tigers.
Even with the win, though, the Fighting Maroons are still at the sixth spot heading into the end of the first round. “Marami pa akong gustong makita sa kanila. Obviously, magma-materialize lang naman yun every game we play,” Chuacuco remarked.
For UST, Joshua Umandal and Jayvee Sumagaysay bannered the effort with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
They fall for the second straight game and now stand at 3-3.
