The UP Fighting Maroons picked up their fifth win after taking down the DLSU Green Archers
League-leading University of the Philippines remained unbeaten in UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football action after clipping De La Salle University, 2-0, Thursday morning at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The Fighting Maroons struck early courtesy of an 18th minute conversion from Miggy Clarino for the 1-0 lead, and never looked back.
Third-year striker King Miyagi shut down any chances of DLSU pulling even after hitting in the 87th minute for his fifth goal of the season to double the UP lead.
Even with five minutes added to injury time, the Maroons shackled the Green Archers to hold on to the 2-0 victory.
While it was a gritty win over a DLSU side that was looking to avoid back-to-back losses, head coach Anto Gonzales still had some points to address.
“Not our best game, especially in the first thirty minutes of the second half. La Salle brought the game to us, we didn’t match the intensity, we didn’t match their workrate, so that’s why they were able to control the game during that stretch.” Gonzales said post-match.”
With the March sun shining brightly above the Rizal Memorial football pitch, Gonzales discredited the heat as having anything to do with UP’s slow start in the second half.
“They finished strongly, the boys, in the last ten minutes, they turned things around, so I don’t think it’s the heat. They’ve been training under the heat for quite some time, so really, it’s a matter of mentality.”
UP improves to five wins and a draw for 16 points in the season, while DLSU drops their second straight and fall to three wins and three losses for nine points.
