Finals MVP Kai Sotto: ‘Ako ang pinakamasayang tao sa Pilipinas’
Obviously, UAAP champion and Finals MVP Kai Sotto had no reason to be sad
Kai Sotto was all smiles after Ateneo de Manila High School edged out Nazareth School of National University to win the championship in the UAAP 80 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
That was from the very end of Game 3 until his post-game interview. “Siyempre, sobrang saya ko po. Isa ako siguro sa mga pinakamasayang tao sa buong Pilipinas,” he told reporters.
He then continued, “Siyempre, nanalo kami ng championship. Siyempre, sino ba namang ‘di masasarapan dun?”
Indeed, why wouldn’t the towering teen be happy as it was his putback that proved to be the go-ahead basket for the title.
And proving to be a wonderful team player, he deflected all credit to his teammates – even after being hailed as the Finals MVP.
Asked about his gesture, the 7-foot-1 big man answered, “Yung Finals MVP, lahat yun, para sa team ko. Hindi ko naman makukuha yun kung ‘di dahil sa coach ko at sa teammates ko.
Showing that he has a clutch gene and championship DNA to go along with his otherworldly height, Sotto exhibited more evidence that he is more than worthy of the hype. “Tinext po kasi ako ni coach Joe (Silva), sabi niya, ‘Kai, kailangan ka namin. Kailangan mong ipakita talaga yung galing mo,’” he shared.
He then continued, “Sabi ko naman, ‘Coach, ‘di na kailangang sabihin yan. Gagawin ko talaga yan kasi itong last game, para sayo ‘to.’”
He did what he said he would do and now, the 15-year-old has two trophies to showcase his worth – one, a UAAP championship and two, a Finals MVP.
