Far Eastern University closed the first round of eliminations on a winning note.

Far Eastern University outlasted gritty University of Sto. Tomas in an extended fourth set battle to escape with a 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 36-34, win Saturday in the 80th UAAP men's volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.

The Tamaraws needed to save five set points before turning back the Tigers as FEU recovered from its previous setback to close the first round of eliminations with a 6-1 win-loss record.

Jude Garcia led the Morayta-based squad, who came off a sorry four-set loss to National University that snapped its five-game winning run Wednesday, with 19 points anchored on 13 attacks including the match-clinching back-to-back attacks to seal the two-hour, 12-minute duel.

Redijohn Paler added 16 markers while John Paul Bugaoan registered 13 points for the Tams, which received 43 free points off UST's atrocious number of errors.

The Tigers absorbed their third straight defeat and slid to 3-4 slate.

UST was in control of the fourth frame after taking a 22-19 lead before FEU made a run to tie it at 23. Joshua Umandal pushed the Tigers at set point with an off the block kill but Vyxen Valenzuela sent his serve long for the first on many deuces in the frame.

UST will take four more set point advantages with its last coming off an ace by Arnold Bautista, 34-33.

But FEU got the crucial break of the match when Bautista committed a service error that paved the way for Garcia's late game heroics.

Bautista had 21 points while Umandal finished with 20 as the duo combined for 34 of the Tigers' 61 total attack points.

Manuel Medina had 11 markers while Jayvee Sumagaysay chipped in with 10 in a lost cause for UST.
